MBBS Admission Under NRI Quota

Medical courses in India are highly sought-after by students. Admissions for these courses are regulated by the National Medical Commission (NMC). To secure admission, students must take the NEET examination, with scores determining eligibility for medical colleges in the country. In addition to the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) and the 85% state quota seats, deemed universities in India reserve seats for NRI candidates under the 15% NRI quota. This quota is allocated by the NMCand encompasses Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (POI), and non-OCI foreign nationals. NRI students can apply for both NRI and management reserved seats, while OCI, POI, and non-OCI foreign nationals are only eligible for NRI quota medical admission. To secure MBBS admissions under the NRI quota, all NRI candidates must successfully clear the NEET 2024 exam. It's important to note that NRI sponsored candidates have limited options for government medical colleges.

  1. Indian Origin (PIO.), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Non-OCI, and their children fall under the NRI category.
  2. Students who are kids of State or Central Government employees staying foreign on deputation are considered NRI
  3. Candidates must belong to Indian origin and reside or study in a foreign country.
  4. Indian citizens’ kids staying abroad for business or employment are also considered NRI
  5. Students born abroad but the parents are of Indian origin come under the NRI category.
OCI candidates are Overseas Citizens of India whose parents or Grandparents reside in another nation and have citizenship of that county but originally belonged to India. So these students are qualified to apply as OCI if granted Overseas Citizenship of India and have an OCIcard. And according to the Karnataka High Court, Students holding Overseas Citizens of India cards must be considered Indian citizens for admission to medical courses. They can get admission under the state quota.

To be eligible for the NRI Quota, you must fulfill the following criteria:

  1. Successfully cleared the NEET Exam.
  2. Possess a valid passport.
  3. Have at least one parent who is currently residing abroad as an NRI
  4. According to the Supreme Court of India, the sponsor responsible for financing your education must be a first-degree relative of yours and a non-resident Indian (NRI).

Note: SC/ST/OBC/PH category NEET-qualified students are not eligible under the NRI quota.

If you do not have any parents or relatives, your guardian must be an NRI living abroad and legally declare you as their ward. This should be substantiated by an affidavit demonstrating their active involvement and interest in your educational matters.

Please ensure that you have the following documents ready for submission by the sponsor:

Additionally, the sponsor must submit the following documents:

  2. Bank account passbook(s) belonging to the NRIs.
  3. Valid passport(s) of the sponsor.
